2021 Warragul Vineyard Riesling
Riesling from the original 40yr old vines in Warragul.
When I took over these vines I knew there was potential to make some pretty serious riesling. Old vines, never irrigated, North facing slope on red volcanic soil in a climate like we have? should mean power and depth.
Turns out I wasn't wrong. This riesling is a powerhouse. Really low yields (800kg from the fourteen rows) and small, densely flavoured berries.
Wild fermented and aged in barrel on full lees, the wine is 13.5% alc but with PH of 3.05 it has acid, tension.
Nose is sherberty, so aromatic and pretty, floral. Palette is bright but dense, really quite textural and creamy with heaps of fresh pear and tonnes of layers that will keep developing over the next bunch of years.
